Surgery info and first-hand accounts?

By , January 12, 2010 12:31 am

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been thinking about surgery. My therapist recommended I start by gathering information – no thoughts at this point about whether or not I actually want surgery – just so I can reduce my own ignorance.

I figured I’d start by asking y’all if you had any links or resources you’d recommend for someone beginning to think about The Surgery. Or, if you’d had The Surgery and are willing to share, what doctor did you use? How was the experience?

I have some links I’ve been finding, and will hopefully post those later this week, but I’d love any recommendations for where to start looking. Thanks!

Mine was horrible, a disaster by any reasonable surgical standards, and required a lot of revision. But that was a long time ago. From what I understand there’s a wealth of literature for surgeons to study these days, and the ones that specialize in srs obviously have had a lot of practice, and practice makes, well, something better than no practice.

Disasters aside, I never regretted it. I regretted how little research I did on the surgeon (those were pre-Intertubes days), and I regretted the multiple revisions it took to remedy the problems, but I’ve never regretted the choice to have surgery. If you do decide to do it, do your own research, and make sure you feel completely comfortable with your choice of surgeon. That might sound like a very obvious thing to say, but I think there’s a tendency, once you get on the surgery train, to think it’s too hard to stop, or to change trains.

As to whether it’s the right thing for you to do, that probably depends on how inconvenient you find having a penis. Some people don’t mind, and personally I think if you can stand not having major surgery (because it is major!) then it’s probably safer not to have it.

Best of luck, hope other people have more up-to-date and relevant information for you.

I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m definitely trying to gather lots of information before even thinking about making a decision, but I appreciate the reminder that more info is always a good thing.

As for the inconvenience of a penis… I think that’s a good way to look at it. For years, I would have wished my penis away on a genie’s lamp with no hesitation. More recently, I’m wishing I’d had surgery, at some point in the past. (So I could live with the results, but not deal with the pain and difficulty.) I’m drifting closer to being willing to undergo surgery, but I still don’t think I’m quite there.
